Guy Harvey Shirts
Today is the day where we go to the beautiful country of Belize. The wife and I get up early in the morning around 8 am to get ready for a great day in another new country. So far our cruise has been unbelievable and each and every day keeps getting better and better. Here is what is on our agenda today.
The first thing we did was get ready. I went ahead and picked out on of my nicer looking Guy Harvey shirts that would be comfortable to wear during the day that wouldn't be too hot for when we would be on our shore excursion tour to the Mayan Ruins called Altun Ha. Please excuse the spelling, I am not sure if I spelled it right.
The wife and I went down to our favorite breakfast restaurant called the Garden cafe for a great buffet breakfast to hold us over until lunch time when we got back from our shore excursion in Belize. The cruise director Simon gave us the ok to disembark off the ship and hop on a tender that would take us to the island. The reason why the ship couldn't come within 5 miles of the port was that Belize has the second biggest barrior reef and it was too shallow for the ships to come any closer. But, who cares, the tender was fun because you are driving past beautiful islands and the scenery was just gorgeous.
We finally docked in the port and we were greeted by ship staff dressed up as male and female pirates that would pose and take pictures with you. That was pretty cool and the blonde pirate girls were definetly worth a good stare. We didn't have time to walk through the port yet because we had to make it to our excursion bus but we will be back later on to do some shopping.
Fishing Hats
We boarded our bus which looked like an older version of a Greyhound bus. Comfortable seating and nice cool air conditioning as we made our way through the city of Belize. The tour guide Paula was awesome and very knowledgable. She had a great sense of humor as well which made the tour that much more fun. As we went through the city of Belize she told us that Belize was the main contributor of Lobster to the restaurant Red Lobster. When you are eating lobster at Red Lobster chances that lobster was caught in the waters of
Belize. That was something I never knew.
After an hour on the tour bus we finally came to the Altun Ha Mayan ruins. I put on one of my fishing hats so that I could protect my face from getting a sunburn while we were walking around. We saw about 4 Mayan temples that we in what they called a "plaza". All the temples where in different areas but seemed like there were surrounding the middle field that we were standing in which was about the size of a football field. Each Mayan temple has a number of steps on them. They say that if the Mayan temple has 13 steps than that means there are 13 different levels or rooms inside that particular temple. The high priests were very knowledgable in astronomy and would predict when a eclipse would come and use that to gain power over their people.
They would tell the people that our Gods are unhappy with you and is going to take away your sun so you cant grow your crops unless you provide some gifts to the gods. Then the eclipse would happen and the people would start believing the priests and give gifts. But what goes around comes around. When the droughts came and the colony would complain about the gods not giving them water to grow their crops they would come to the high priests for answers and when they couldn't give a good answer then the people would overthrow them.
After the tour we made it back to town where the tour guide gave us free drink coupons to have a couple drinks at a restaurant called the Smokey Mermaid. We had some rum punch which was awesome but the food we had was cheap and unbelievable. The wife had some cajun chicken breast and I had some fried shrimp. I can't tell you how good the food was!
We then did some shopping in the port around the docks and made our way back to the tender. We hopped on the tender and said our goodbyes to the beautiful city of Belize. We went up to the room and put our stuff away and went straight outside to deck twelve to do our daily ritual of watching the sunset while saying farewell to Belize with a cocktail in one hand and my new bride in the other.
