Having The Right Fishing Gear Is The Key To Success

Whenever we go out for any fishing trip we always make sure that we have the best fishing gear and fishing accessories to take with us so that if we run into that trophy catch we will be able to reel it in and not have the fish cut us off and leave us sitting in our boat scratching our heads wondering what just happened. Since every fishing trip is unique in it's own way, you can never be totally prepared for what happens whether you are catching fish or not. Let me tell you about another awesome day we had fishing out of Black Point Marina.

We headed to the docks at our Guy Harvey® Bull Dolphin Tee normal time of 7:00 am to beat the rest of the boaters that were also on their way. I picked out out one of my lucky Guy Harvey Shirts that had the fish on it that we were targeting today. It had the Bull dolphin or Mahi Mahi on the back of it. We lowered the boat in the water and I started the 225 Yamaha 4 stroke to warm it up while my father parked the truck and the boat trailer in the parking lot. I covered myself with sunscreen and placed the trolling rods in the rod holders so that we could get them ready as we idled through the no wake zones.

I just bought a new Iland Black Hole skirt that was dark green and flourescent yellow that I just had to try out. This thing was perfect for Mahi Mahi because it was not only big but the way it looked in the water was  unbelievable. I rigged up this skirt on the 50 pound monofilament line and it rested perfectly over the triple rigged ballyhoo and trolling rod number 1 was already to go. I added a deep diving yozuri lure on the other troller just to see if we could cover the upper and lower areas of the water to see where these Mahi Mahiwere feeding.

Iland Lures - Black Hole

We made our way out of the no wake zones and hit the throttle and hauled tail through Biscayne Bay and on out past Carribbean Reef light house and headed directly Iland Lures Tournament Tackle - Black Hole east to get to the deeper trolling waters. We were going so fast that our fishing hats almost blew off our heads. We traveled east for about 30 minutes until we hit about 900 feet on the depth finder. We dropped our lines and started to troll and wait.

We were having a bit of bad luck because we were trolling for about 2 hours and our baits were not even touched. As all fishermen know this is the reason why it is called fishing and not catching because some days you can't go wrong and then other days you cant seem to even catch a cold.

Noon came and the scorching sun was upon us and then we saw something that looked promising. There was a nice patch of sea weed with some bait fish hanging around it. We trolled around this patch and bang!! The troller on the right was hit hard. This was the pole that had the new Island lure on it and I couldn't believe it was working. I grabbed the rod and looked behind the boat to see what it was and it was just what we were looking for. I saw a nice bull dolphin jumping all over the place and you could tell he was upset and wanted off this line.

Fishing Accessories

The fight last all of about ten minutes but it was really fun. We gaffed the fish which was 10 -13 pounds and not too shabby for the day that we were having. Then we started to troll again and just as we got our lines out the other pole got smacked. This time the fish hit a deep diving lure and we couldn't see what it was at first but then in a few minutes we saw that it was a nice female mahi mahi (cow) that was about the same size as the bull we just caught. This one was not a jumper but still a strong fighter but no where near as strong as a bull dolphin fighter.  We brought her into the boat and directly into the fish box.

We really had a good time so far and we decided that we had our fill for the day and decided to call it a day and try to get home early so that we could enjoy a nice feast of grilled Mahi Mahi later on that night. In order to catch fish you not only have to know the top areas to fish in but you must have the best fishing gear and fishing accessories as well. If you don't think a certain lure or bait looks good then chances are neither will the fish. Having the best fishing gear is 50% of your battle when it comes to finding and catching the fish you are targeting.
